  2. News : Communication Coordinator Transition

As we shared in the March 7 newsletter, WPC Communication Coordinator Kara Pearce has accepted a new job and we’re seeking applicants for this role. If you know someone who might be a good fit, please direct them to www.wpcdurham.org/careers.

We will take a moment to thank Kara for her time at Westminster at the 11am service this Sunday, March 25. Her last day with us will be April 1. Kara will stay on in a contract capacity a few hours per week through the end of May to complete work with the capital campaign.

While we seek a permanent Communication Coordinator, we welcome Bria Adams to fill this role on a temporary basis. Bria is a graduate of North Carolina Central University with a strong background in marketing. She will take care of Westminster’s worship bulletin, newsletter, website, and Facebook page in this interim period.

You can reach Bria at bria@wpcdurham.org. Note that all myWPC-related questions should be directed to Barb Schmidt.

  3. News : Finance & Property Staff Update

In the January 11 newsletter, we gave you an update on our contract with Trinity Concepts, a financial management firm for local churches and nonprofits, to support our finance needs following former Office Manager Elizabeth Takla’s departure. Trinity Concepts’ founder Burke Raper has kept the church’s financial needs met along with his staff members, Sean Allen and Mary Martha Reed. Learn more about our finance staff from Trinity Concepts.

The Personnel Committee, in partnership with Ways & Means, has been assessing the church’s needs in financial oversight and property management. A job description for a Property Manager will soon be finalized. At its March meeting, the Session approved a recommendation to continue our contract with Trinity Concepts through the end of 2018. A finance staff person will be available on the days and times listed below. Administrative Assistant Barb Schmidt will continue to help triage any property-related questions as we search for a Property Manager.

    • Mondays: Burke (9am-12pm), Mary Martha (afternoon)
    • Tuesdays: Burke (9am-12pm)
    • Wednesdays: Burke (9am-12pm)

  4. News : Staff Transition Ahead

We’ll continue in a season of staff transition as Communication Coordinator Kara Pearce leaves Westminster at the end of the month to take a position with the Center for Child and Family Health. She will stay on in a contract capacity a few hours per week through the end of May to complete work on the capital campaign.

We are sad to see her go, but excited for this new opportunity for her. The Personnel Committee is putting a transition plan in place to cover her responsibilities, and a search for a new Communication Coordinator will begin soon.

When you see Kara, please take a moment to thank her for her incredible work and dedication to the community of faith at Westminster!

  5. News : Session Notes – 1/27/18

On January 27, 2018, the Session held its annual retreat at Camp New Hope. Our day together began and ended with worship.
The Session gladly approved four baptism requests from Westminster families for dates in February, April, and May.

The review of the 2017 end-of-year finances was a welcome change from last year’s discussion. Conscientious budgeting and spending by our staff and committees, combined with the generosity of our congregation, allowed us to erase our budget deficit and resulted in a cash surplus. The Session considered and approved a balanced budget for 2018 which fully funds the requests of each of Westminster’s many committees.

This discussion was aided by the Stewardship Committee’s report on the success of the “Taking the Next Step” campaign. As of the Session retreat, pledges for 2018 totaled $1,054,275, an increase over last year’s total by roughly $75,000. That total is expected to rise. The approved budget is for $1,119,275.
