  3. Online Worship Services : Grateful for the Invitation

    I John 4:16b-21
    Luke 14:7-14

Last week we wrestled with this same text, thinking about the spiritual work involved in expanding the table, the theme of our Lenten book read. For the table to get bigger, we must be prepared, because welcoming people who look differently or are from different backgrounds or believe different things, is tough. We ask God to help us both expand our vision and see that each of us, no matter how smart and faithful we are, don’t own truth. That spiritual work, through conversation and prayer, is tough, but it matters, and it’s worth it. It is, to use Pavlovik’s words, “the fierce crucible of redemptive spiritual community”[1]

    Gratitude Sunday: March 18

On Sunday, March 18, we’ll celebrate Gratitude Sunday! Our children and youth have been creating reflections on why they love Westminster, which will be on beautiful display that morning. You will be invited to fill out your own reflection during worship to add to those from our young ones. We’re looking forward to this day of giving thanks!

On March 18, we will also hand out devotional journals to help us prepare our hearts and minds for the challenge before us in this capital campaign. The journals have devotions for 21 days, each followed by questions to consider, a prayer, and space to jot down your thoughts. We hope you will use these journals as you consider the prayer, “Lord, what do you want to do through me?”

    Save the Date: April 15

On Sunday, April 15, we’ll have Ministry Sunday at the 8:30 and 11am worship services. This will be a time to reflect on the ways Westminster’s missions and ministries change lives in the congregation, in Durham, and beyond.

We’ll also have a Celebration Breakfast between services in the Fellowship Hall that day! Everyone is invited to come together and share in excitement over the campaign’s progress and vision. Details and invitation to follow.

    2-Minute Interviews

What do you love about Westminster?

What does your friend love about Westminster?

Grab a friend or family member and invite them up to the Interview Room in Room 203. We’ve set up a space for you to come and interview one another so that we might hear your stories about why Westminster matters in your life.

    • Have a confirmation mentor you’d like to get to know better? Invite her to the Interview Room!
    • Know a longtime member who can tell you a history of their love for WPC? Invite him to the Interview Room.
    • Curious about why someone in your family loves WPC – your child, your grandparent, even your spouse? Invite them to the Interview Room.

You are invited to record video of your interview, using the supplies and instructions ready to go in that space.* The Interview Room will be open every Sunday morning until April 8.

*Videos will be shared with the congregation on Westminster’s website and Facebook page. Recording an interview indicates your permission for having your video shared.

  5. News & Articles : Session Notes – 2/18/18

Ways & Means chair Dave Pottenger updated his fellow elders on the church’s financial situation. Of note, the church currently has a healthy cash surplus, and the land debt at the time of the report was $176,056.

John Graham, co-chair of the Capital Campaign Leadership Committee, presented a report on planning for the capital campaign. In addition to a communication plan aimed at making the entire congregation aware of the campaign, and the need for it, the committee is planning a series of special events. These events include Gratitude Sunday on March 18, a Celebration Breakfast between worship services on April 15, and Commitment Sunday on April 22. The congregation is encouraged to watch the bulletin, newsletter, website, and your mailbox for additional capital campaign communication.
