The goal of the Global Missions Committee is to foster awareness of and coordinate the response to needs and concerns beyond the immediate Durham area. The committee is made up of a chairperson (typically a deacon), an elder liaison to the Session, and a number of at-large members from throughout the congregation, representing many different points of view and areas of concern.
Folks tend to join Global Missions through a personal interest in a particular organization or issue that they feel passionate about, though all are welcome to attend our monthly meetings and/or participate in any of our sponsored activities.
This is an annual holiday event coordinated in partnership with WPC’s Local Missions Committee. It serves as a fundraiser for local nonprofit organizations as well as an opportunity to purchase fair trade items from Durham’s Bull City Fair Trade (formerly One World Market). It’s a great opportunity to get some holiday shopping done early and support some wonderful local organizations at the same time!
Global Missions organizes periodic meal-packing events through Rise Against Hunger, an international food relief organization headquartered in Raleigh. Through these intergenerational volunteer events, members of our congregation pack 10,000 vacuum-sealed meals in just 2 hours at a cost of $2500, money which we typically raise via donations from the congregation. It is a very popular event because it’s a great way to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. It’s also a whole lot of fun! Watch a video from the March 2010 meal packing event.
The purpose of Music Mission Kiev is to provide Christian outreach through the presentation of sacred classical music in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. MMK works to proclaim the Gospel to and through Ukrainian musicians to the world. It ministers to the emerging Christian community through evangelism, discipleship, and humanitarian outreach to widows and children.
Global Missions is excited to be building a relationship with Pastor Leon Dorleans and Haiti Outreach Ministries. A plan is in the works that includes many ways for WPC members to participate, beginning with a work trip. Learn more about Haiti Outreach Ministries and other nonprofits in place there in “A Guide to Mission in Haiti” (copies available in the Library).
Global Missions provides ongoing financial support to various international organizations, including Don Wehmeyers’ Mission in Mexico. We also provide disaster relief assistance through our adult missions programs. We’ve sent money to Doctors Without Borders to support famine relief efforts in Africa, and we’ve provided volunteers and supplies to North Carolina communities in the wake of hurricanes and tornados.
