The Art of Renewal Summer Series

Home 9 Events 9 The Art of Renewal Summer Series

The Art of Renewal is a series of workshops and talks hosted by local artists here at WPC. The artists will guide us in creating images and words that tell the story of our individual journeys of faith, hope, and spiritual renewal. Most workshops will be held on Sundays, but there will also be time on Wednesday evenings for you to work on your art alongside your WPC friends. At the end of the summer, we will celebrate with an exhibition of the art we’ve created, a panel discussion with artists and inspirers, a delicious catered fellowship supper, and gratitude for the Tuttles’ time of respite and return to our WPC community.

Sunday, June 4, 11:00am-12:30pm:  Artist’s Workshop – Create a Retablo with Artist Jaclyn Bowie
Register Now

The word “retablo” comes from the Latin for “behind the altar” in reference to devotional paintings placed in Catholic churches. Retablos can be found in churches, shrines, and homes across Mexico. They are small, brightly colored works that incorporate words, pictures, and images to tell the story of an individual’s spiritual journey. Pre-workshop journaling reflection exercises will prepare you for creating your own retablo. This workshop will be offered in two sessions – the first the date above, and the second on Wednesday, June 7, 6:30-8:00pm, in Room 209.

Sunday, June 11, 6:00-7:15pm:  “Fictive Kin,” an Artist Talk with William Paul Thomas
Register Now
William Paul Thomas has developed an ongoing series of enigmatic oil and acrylic portraits featuring a variety of Black men from his social circle. Most of the men in the artworks are not blood relatives. One of the primary themes of this project is to challenge viewers and the artist himself to consider the barriers that limit our compassion for strangers. Thomas will present a talk centered on that project and open up a discussion about the need to cultivate a deeper sense of empathy for the people in our lives outside of our immediate family.
