“The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it.” – Psalm 24
In keeping with this truth and our knowledge that we have been charged with the stewardship of the earth, Westminster is seeking to join other PC(USA) congregations in becoming an “Earth Care Congregation.”
“Earth Care Congregation” is a model to respond to the “Call to Restore the Creation” presented by our denomination. Becoming an Earth Care Congregation involves a process that began for WPC in January and will be completed by the end of 2023. There is a working group led by Diana Monroe and Peggy Force, and the effort has received the approval of the Global Missions Committee, the Diaconate, and the Session.
Recognition of WPC as an Earth Care Congregation will require the completion of a study of church’s current environmental practices. The working group will complete this study, which will examine, on a point system, the church’s environmental practices in the areas of worship, education, facilities, and outreach. You will not be surprised to learn that WPC can already count many points in each area!
You’ll be hearing more about this important mission in the coming weeks and months, including at Aperture on April 19 and a special Earth Sunday event after worship on April 23. The Earth Care Congregation working group welcomes additional members – please contact the church office if you would like to be part of this new mission for WPC!
