We’ll begin with an exercise. We’re not going to do a foot-washing today – I wouldn’t dare spring it on you out of the blue – but I want you to think for a moment about washing the feet of the people around you. Of you having a bowl of water and kneeling down, rolling your sleeves up, towel thrown over your shoulder. And they –it can be the person on either side, you pick. They take off their shoes, setting them aside. Placing their feet in the water, I bet its cold. No one’s feet are pretty, they all smell a little. Maybe there’s a scar, or a blister, and old wound. And you pour the water over those feet, wiping them down, gently. We’re not talking a scrub down or a pedicure. But rinsing those feet off, out of welcome, care.Read more...
Monthly Archives: February, 2018
As we shared in the February 7 newsletter, Westminster is embarking upon a capital campaign to:
- Renovate the Fellowship Hall,
- Do needed maintenance on our Sanctuary and Mission Center, which includes upgrades to our heating and cooling system to make it more energy efficient, and
- Pay off the mortgage on the property adjacent to our campus, which we purchased in 2015.
With these changes, we’ll be making room for mission, community, and faith, and we are guided by God’s call in Micah 6:8 for this important work. Our capital campaign project will enable us to continue to:
- Do justice, carrying out mission work that meets deep needs in Durham and beyond;
- Love kindness, building relationships of care that knit us together as a community; and
- Walk humbly with God, deepening the faith that sustains us as we serve and support one another.
What’s Coming Up
Check your mailbox this week for a bright yellow brochure! It shows the exciting ways that our capital campaign project will equip us to answer God’s call. Inside the brochure is a special prayer reminder to put up somewhere around your home.
Beginning in mid-March, you’ll hear more about the campaign within your small groups – Church School classes, committees, ministries, supper clubs, etc. Everyone will also receive a Devotional Journal in March to guide us through this process.
On March 18, we’ll have Gratitude Sunday, celebrating gratitude as the wellspring of generosity. You’ll hear more about Gratitude Sunday soon, but be thinking about what you love most about your church home now!

Childcare will be available for children under age 3 by RSVP. Baked ziti will be available for dinner at 5:45pm; the dance begins at 6:30pm. Please sign up by Monday, March 5.
On Sunday, March 4, Westminster will welcome students and campus ministers from Duke, North Carolina Central, and UNC-Chapel Hill to worship. Duke campus minister Libby Boehne and students from the ministries will give the Sharing Our Mission during worship.
We invite you to share a pew and a warm welcome with our guests that day. Campus ministries are a significant source for friendships and growth during college, and we look forward to building relationships with students in the area.
The next Inquirers’ Class begins on Sunday, March 11, in Room 105 at 9:45am. Get to know fellow inquirers, learn about the PC(USA) and WPC’s ministry, meet staff, and find out where YOU can grow and serve!
The class will run for six weeks, meeting on March 11, 18, 25, April 8, 22, and 29. Space is limited so that we might get to know one another well.
