In the Old Testament, prophets were the ones God chose to speak truth to power.

It was the prophet Nathan who confronted King David after his adultery with Bathsheba…Nathan who accused David with the words: "You are the man!"

God chose the prophet Amos to accuse the rich for "buying the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals."

In modern American life, we often find secular prophets like artists, actors, and writers telling us the truth about ourselves.

In the run-up to the 2012 presidential lesson, the Sojurners Sunday School class will pursue a ten-week series entitled "The Prophets, the Media, and Aaron Sorkin." The class will be taught by John Dancy, a former NBC News correspondent in Washington and overseas, who is a member and elder here at Westminster.

Aaron Sorkin is an Oscar-winning screenwriter, who has spent his career speaking truth to power through such TV shows as "West Wing" and "The Newsroom" and such movies as "The Social Network" and "The American President." Speeches from some of his more popular shows will provide conversation-starters for discussions of the issues in this election.

The class begins on Sunday, September 16, in Room 204.
