Exploring Our Spirituality A Lenten Look at the Gospels 2004
|
Are you interested in a deeper understanding of:
Join us as we listen to audio tapes by Fr. John Shea, noted theologian and storyteller, and then discuss his spiritual insights of Gospel stories. Each session is designed to stand on its own, so if you can not come to all of them, come to those you can.
Tuesdays evenings from 7:45 PM to 9:15 PM in the Parlor. Leaders: Paul Ransford and Eileen McAvoy
Session 1, March 2: Introduction, Who do You Say I Am?, The True Self
Shea gives an overview of his approach to the spiritual teachings of the Gospels and then explores the difference between peoples’ thoughts about Jesus and what He said about himself. Knowing who Jesus is gives us important insights into who we are.
Session 2, March 9: Call to Repentance/Lost Coin/Lost Sheep/Prodigal Son
Jesus presents a theology different than that of the Pharisees, and perhaps different from some of our common ways of thinking. Through a series of well-known parables, we gain insights into the compassionate God who seeks wholeness and inclusion.
Session 3, March 16: Caesar and God, Greatest Commandment, Stay Awake
People want Jesus to tell them what to do about matters of the world; Jesus teaches them about matters of the heart and the attention that living from the heart requires.
Session 4, March 23: Peter Stories, The Unmerciful Servant, The Path to the Cross
Shea explores sin, forgiveness, fear, and the saving grace of love.
Session 5, March 30: Freedom/Violence/Compulsivity
Shea looks at some of the main blocks to spirituality and then to Jesus’ passion and crucifixion as the way to break those blocks.
Session 6, April 6: Crucifixion, Road to Emmaus, Conclusion
The crucifixion narrative in Luke and an encounter with the risen Christ give insights into the nature of God’s will and power, then and now.
