Katrina has come and gone but the misery that she left in her wake will be with the residents of the Gulf Coast for a very long time to come. People need help and the Global Missions Committee proposes three ways in which members of Westminster can assist in recovery.
First, the Global Missions Committee will be sending monies from its Disaster Relief Fund to aid in relief efforts. If you are interested in donating to this fund, you can do so by writing a check to Westminster Presbyterian Church with “Disaster Relief Fund“ in the memo line. The committee will send monies to agencies as it did with the monies raised after December’s tsunami and fund our own direct efforts at relief.
Secondly, if you wish to send monies immediately, your staff recommends Church World Service which has people in place all over the Gulf Coast and knows how to effectively direct funds to the most immediate local needs. Church World Service Katrina Response, #6280 1006 Lamond Ave., Durham, NC 27701.Thirdly, the Committee will seek to sponsor a mission trip to the Gulf Region to help with rebuilding. The committee will consult with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and other organizations active in the region to decide when and where our group of workers should go. Anyone interested in being a part of this trip should contact Paul Ransford (paul@wpcdurham.org), Chick Palermo (cpalerm@attglobal.net), or Frances Anton (f.anton@stanfordalumni.org). The committee will keep the congregation informed of the plans for this trip as they materialize.
