Also see Committees. Committees usually are involved in decision making and taking action on those decisions; are often headed by a WPC officer and tend to meet the needs of the church generally. Groups are more centered on activities that serve the interests of the group.
Persons interested in co-rec and men’s softball or volleyball teams should contact Darren Skeen [383-0740]. Childcare is an important ministry in the life of our church. It encompasses not only Sunday morning nurseries, but also nurseries for all other worship services and many other church functions. WPC is committed to providing childcare for ongoing events such as morning/evening classes, Inquirers’ classes, Sunday School teacher training sessions, etc., when the need is identified. This commitment arises from a desire to enable all members to participate in the life of the church family as fully as they wish. The most familiar aspect of the childcare ministry is the Sunday morning nurseries, which serve children through Kindergarten. The children are grouped into a mixed-ages nursery during the 8:45 a.m. service and four age-groupings during the 11:00 AM service. Each Sunday these are staffed by two paid care-persons and twelve volunteers. The volunteers are organized into thirteen teams with each team serving once per quarter. The nursery schedule runs from July, 2001 - July, 2002. This ministry relies very heavily on members’ participation to make it happen. Such comprehensive childcare cannot be provided by just a few people. For the Sunday nurseries alone, 624 volunteer slots need to be filled. Happily though, all that is required is the willingness to serve about one hour four times a year in the age-group of your choice. This ministry is suitable for middle grade schoolers through senior citizens and the rewards are great! Not only are you nurturing the next generation of Christians, you are also providing a much needed hour of "quiet time" and renewal for their parents. (Contact Person: Anne Vann [493-0001] ) All men of WPC are invited to join us for our breakfast meeting in the Calhoon Cabin, held on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 8:00 AM, September through June. Two men volunteer to plan and prepare the breakfast, and another member is responsible for that month’s program which may take different forms: an informal discussion of a topic of personal interest to the leader, a study of a book or provocative article, a commentary on a Bible passage, or a formal presentation by a guest speaker. As we begin our 15th year, we want to extend an invitation to all of the men in the congregation. Besides our monthly breakfast meetings, we participate in a variety of social and service activities: serving a meal at the Community Shelter, working on a Habitat for Humanity house, or getting away for the Men’s Retreat each June on Kerr Lake. We are planning on participating in a "Laymens’ Sunday" this year as well as working on several specialty projects in the church community. The Men’s Breakfast Fellowship grew out of an expressed need for men in our growing church family to get to know each other better so we can feel more comfortable in sharing our faith and our humanity in a supportive Christian way. Come and join us for our first breakfast meeting on September 16th, 2001. There’s always an extra plate! (Contact Persons: Mickey Henriquez [ 493-8730 or Shayne Ruffing [ 402-9481) This is a cooperative play group which meets each Friday (Sept – May) from 9:00 – 12:00 noon. It is open to children 14 months (must be walking) to 3 years of age. PMO allows for eight children supervised by one teacher and one rotating parent helper. Enrollment is open first to members of Westminster, then the community if space is available. (Contact Person: Jennifer Feiler [402-9278] ) A good way to become better acquainted with a small group of WPC members! Supper clubs generally meet monthly for a meal (in some cases it’s lunch) and fellowship. Sign-up sheets with descriptions of the groups will be available in early fall. Call the church if you wish to become part of a new or on-going supper club. Clubs themes include:
Westminster
School For Young Children Welcome Women! These retreats, held each fall and spring, are great opportunities to meet a diverse group of other women in the Westminster family. They are a time of laughter, meditation, relaxation, study, discussion, games, food, and fellowship. With the goal of sharing fun, fellowship, learning, and service, www.adults enjoy Fourth Friday Lunches at local restaurants and, every other month, trips and outings, mostly in the Triangle/Triad area. Watch the WPC newsletter for details about times, arrangements, and reservations. (Contact Person: Ann Kline [ 493-3988) Yard Days Youth fellowship meetings will take place on Sunday evenings.
