The Session of Westminster Presbyterian Church (WPC) convened for a stated meeting at 5:00 p.m. on 18 June 2006 in room 105 of the WPC Mission Center.  The Moderator, H.Holderness, was present and called the meeting to order and it was opened with a devotional and a prayer by B.Nicoll.

 

Associate Pastors B.Berghaus and P.Ransford were present.  

 

Elders F.Anton, B.Derr, A.Denson, D.Elvers, N.Gaddis, J.Graham, J.Jones, S.Landis, B.Nicoll, M.T.Peters and D.Wellemeyer were present.  Elder C.Haynes was absent and excused.

 

WPC staff members B.Fletcher and N.Rozak were present.

 

Clerk of Session D.Derr was present.

 

Members of the current Inquirer’s Class hereinafter identified were also present.

 

The Moderator declared a quorum present.

 

SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS

 

EXAMINATION AND RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS:

 

Members of the Session were paired with specific participants from the current Inquirer’s Class who expressed an interest in joining the congregation.  After meeting with the Inquirer the Elder then introduced him/her.

 

Motion:  A motion receiving the following Inquirer’s as members of WPC by the pertinent procedures prescribed in the Book of Order was made, seconded and approved:

Appointment of Commission to Examine and Receive Inquirer’s Scott and Claire Forest as Members

 

The Moderator appointed a Commission of the Session consisting of S.Landis and N.Gaddis as Commissioners to examine and receive Inquirer’s Scott and Claire Forest as members of WPC by the pertinent procedures prescribed in the Book of Order.

 

MINUTES:

The minutes of the stated meeting of the Session on 21 May 2006 and of the called meeting of the congregation on 11 June 2006 were read, approved and adopted as distributed.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

 

Letter from Pilgrim United Church of Christ

 

The Clerk read aloud a letter from Pilgrim United Church of Christ to the Westminster Presbyterian congregation on the occasion of Haywood’s retirement dated June 2006, a copy of which is attached to these minutes as page 5.

 

COMMISSION AND OTHER REPORTS:

 

Ways and Means: (D.Wellemeyer) The minutes of the Ways and Means Committee meeting on May 10, 2006 and Financial Statements for May, 2006 were distributed via the Session Packet mailing and key points in them were summarized.  A subcommittee consisting of Don Heagren, J.Graham, D.Wellemeyer and B.Fletcher is compiling information for compensation for the Interim Pastor position.

 

Fellowship: (H.Holderness) The all church Pig Pickin’ Retirement Celebration following the 11:00 a.m. worship today was a great fellowship gathering of about 500 people. 

 

Education/Kindergarten:  (N.Rozak/M.T.Peters) The minutes of the Christian Education Committee meeting on May 16, 2006 were distributed and key points in them were summarized.  There are 150 children registered for Vacation Church School from five different local churches to be held June 19 – 23.

 

Sanctuary Guild: (J.Jones) The Sanctuary was beautiful today.

 

Youth Liaison:  (S.Landis) The minutes of the Youth Council meeting on May 21, 2006 were distributed and key points in them were summarized.  The Youth are very busy and active. 

 

Global Missions: (F.Anton/P.Ransford) The committee will meet on June 21st.   The Congo Choir Tour will perform in Durham in late July or early August. P.Ransford said the New Hope Presbytery coordinator of the tour has asked to use Bubba. He reminded the Session that because of insurance requirements WPC can only let non-WPC groups use Bubba if a WPC member drives Bubba. P.Ransford also reported that, because the City of New Orleans after August is going to require that hurricane damaged properties be cleaned before they can be fixed, there is now a push among communities of faith to do more cleaning out of these properties

 

Assimilation: (B.Derr) The minutes of the Assimilation Committee meeting on June 14, 2006 were distributed and key points in them were summarized. The meet and greet coffees after the Sunday morning worship services will continue during the summer.

 

Inquirers/Candidates: (C.Haynes) Tully Fletcher has another year left in seminary. Marian Draffin will graduate from seminary at mid-year next year.

 

Worship: (D.Elvers) Communion will be celebrated on July 2, 2006 with Elder responsibility as follows: A.Denson (11:00). 

 

Interim Search Committee: (D.Elvers) B.Nicoll with the able assistance of several reviewers/ commentators did an excellent job preparing the Preliminary Church Information Form. There are three items on the form that are not at closure quite yet. Any further drafts will be circulated for review and comments.

 

Motion: A motion that the Interim Search Committee working in conjunction the pertinent advisers of New Hope Presbytery is authorized to finalize the Church Information Form for an Interim Pastor was made, seconded and approved.

 

Diaconate: (B.Berghaus) The minutes of the Diaconate meeting on April 23, 2006 were distributed via the Session Packet mailing. The Diaconate will elect next year’s officers`     at the meeting on June 25.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

 

Agreement between Haywood Holderness and Westminster Presbyterian Church

 

The Moderator, in order that the Congregation be clear about his status after June 30, 2006, requested the Session to approve a proposed written agreement between him and WPC that he will include in a pastoral letter to the Congregation.

 

Motion: A motion approving the Agreement between Haywood Holderness and Westminster Presbyterian Church attached as page 6 was made, seconded and approved.

 

 

 

 

 

STAFF REPORTS:  

 

B.Fletcher: WPC will pay for subscriptions to The Presbyterian Outlook for all sitting Elders and Deacons. Anyone else may arrange for a personal subscription at a cost of about $40.00.

 

B.Berghaus: She said that the Moderator will be the only WPC Pastor in Durham the last week in June and that he will be available until midnight on June 30, 2006.  Her cell phone number is (919) 210-4230.

 

P.Ransford: His cell phone number is (919) 210-1678.

 

H.Holderness: WPC has two good Associate Pastors that the Session and the Congregation can rely on.

 

CONCERNS:

 

Concerns over the medical conditions of Heidi Kivel, Dean Lanier, William “Cranny” Cranford, Bob Garman, Debby Kredich, Alex Miller, Dave Edwards, Carol Elvers were expressed.

 

HOLY COMMUNION

 

Motion: A motion authorizing the Moderator to preside over and administer the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper at this special gathering of his last Session meeting at WPC was made, seconded and approved.

 

The Moderator then presided over and administered the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.

 

The Session's current business, having been completed, the Moderator declared the meeting adjourned and it was closed with a prayer by him at 7:00 p.m.
