BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES

John Atkins has been a member with his wife, Sandra for 33 years. They raised their two daughters, (Kelly and Ashley) in the church including the pre-school. John has served as a Sunday School teacher (Senior Highs and Adults), usher, lector, Chair of the Worship Committee, Chair of the Annual Stewardship Campaign, Co-Chair of Pastor Retirement Committee and as an Elder. He is an architect and involved in local community affairs.

Bill Bartholomay has been a member for 30 years. He has served WPC in a variety of roles including deacon, elder, and member of other search committees. Bill is a semi-retired school administrator, and is married with two grown children, Brian and Laura.

John Graham has been a member for 15 years, serving as an elder, past chair of Ways and Means, a Sunday School teacher, and playing on the church basketball team. John and his wife Suzanne have three children, Matt, Laura and Rebecca. John is a professor at Duke.

Eileen McAvoy has been a member for 18 years and has served as a Deacon and Elder. She has been active in Stephen Ministry, Christian Education and mission trips, both youth and adult. She started life as a Baptist and works in the field of conflict resolution. She is married to Bill and they have 2 grown children, Diane and Billy.

Sue McCaughan has been a member of WPC for 26 years. She is a certified Christian Educator, and served as educator for WPC for 17 years, retiring in 2000. Sue is an elder (not currently on the Session),a Stephen Minister and she served on the CPM of the Presbytery of New Hope for 12 years. She and her husband Ralph have three children (Mack, Beth and Matt) and five grandchildren .

Mary Todd Peters has been a member for 9 years. She is a certified Christian Educator and served as part time Children's DCE for 1 1/2 years. Mary Todd is an elder and a teacher of the Parenting class, The Way Bible study (with Nancy) and helps out with the children's MP2 mid-week program. She and Mark have 3 girls, Kayley, Rachel and Melissa.

Rebecca Mattern has been a member for 7 years. She is a youth advisor and has participated in annual retreats with senior highs and has stayed up all night at lock-ins with middle schoolers. She has been on 5 summer mission trips, as well as participated in hurricane relief in Mississippi. She has been a Deacon and continues to enjoy being a lector. She is a clinical laboratory supervisor. In her spare moments, she likes to walk and hang out on the couch reading with her Great Dane, Ronin.

Grayson Schmidt is the youth representative on the PNC. She is a junior at Durham School of the Arts and has been a member for ten years. Grayson is very involved in the youth group, as well as in teaching Sunday School and leading a group during the Wednesday afternoon children's program, MP2. Grayson is the daughter of Holly and Mark Schmidt. She has a brother named Thomas.

Doug Wellemeyer has been a member for more than 20 years. Doug has served on and chaired Ways and Means Committee and the Transition Committee, has served on the Diaconate as its co-moderator, recently completed a term on the session, and now serves as the clerk of session. Doug is retired from a 27-year career with Verizon, and now works with Housing for New Hope. Doug and Kay have three grown children, Greg, Carrie and Allison.
